Transitions Challenge 2008/2009

For this challenge we each had to produce a long, narrow piece. Two themes run through the work: the first is that each piece should use only colour from a certain part of the spectrum, so that Terry started with red to orange, Julia worked from orange to yellow, Lois from yellow to green, then Maryel took over with turquoises and blues and finally Kate completed the cycle with blues and back to reds.

For the second theme each piece had to demonstrate a transition from one 'state' to another. This has been interpreted simply as the colours themselves, but also in the concepts of order to chaos, summer to autumn and straight to curved piecing.

Responses from the other Witches, using the same long thin format, hang by the side of each piece.

"Metamorphosis"

One evening I was sitting with a large piece of graph paper in front of me, and started to draw squares. By the end of the day I had finished!

The transition of the different sized squares into oblongs, elongated hexagons and octagons and finally into circles and curves was so easy that I was able to start sewing the components the next day.

I wanted the shapes to stand out by themselves and so quilted in the ditch along every line and curve. I really like the end product.

 "Colour Merge"

My allocated colours for this group challenge were blue, though purple to red.  I have used a favourite technique to blend the colours and create a heavily textured surface.

Each of the smaller squares features a flash of complementary colour and is tied to the background.

"From Order to Chaos"

The idea came from my love of piecing and the myriad possibilities with a simple half – square triangle unit.

The units start off organised into high contrast blocks, but the pattern soon disintegrates as the contrast diminishes and chaos takes over (a bit like my work-room!).

The colours of orange through to pink via red were great to work with and I have used a combination of hand-dyed and commercial fabrics.

"Yellow Brick Road"

Geometric blocks of yellow and orange, hand and machine quilted with patterns and curves to create contrast and interest.

"Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness"

(With thanks to J Keats)

Knowing that I would be using the yellow to green colour palette I could not fail to notice the colours around me this autumn.

The richness of the yellows to greens still on the leaves in November is astonishing and only Mother Nature could have let it happen.
