Chopped Up Challenge 2006/2007

The original idea was for each member to take an A3 photograph or picture and cut it into five strips for each of the other Witches to reproduce in fabric. The fifth strip was then to be enlarged, to produce a ‘zoomed-in’ effect, and made by the originator. This would then be replaced in its original position within the design.

In reality it was more difficult to achieve a coherent design with this idea than we had at first envisaged, and each member resolved her piece in a different way, using either a reduced transfer printed strip over the oversized strip, or placing the enlarged strip out of sequence at one edge of the work.

"La Rue du Soleil"

I have always liked the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, in particular, his landscapes. The ones I like were painted in southern France between 1923 and 1927.

I thought that the chopped up challenge would work quite well with this picture which has a vertical strip appearance.

"Mont St.Michel"

The original photograph was taken by me on a visit to Mont St Michel in France. I was looking for unusual views and found the angles created by the roofs interesting.

I manipulated the image, changing the colours, and experimenting with contrast. The final design consists of strips taken from each of the resulting colourways, combining bright colours in unexpected ways.

I broke the rules and placed the 'zoomed in' strip on the edge, as this seemed to make most sense of the design.

A crumbling old wall can inspire a variety of texture from stitch. The Greek urn brings contrast in colour and dimension from the vegetation.
