2002/3 Challenge - "Quilted"

This challenge was probably the most difficult that we had attempted  to date. When one is quilting one's own work it is hard enough to obtain a nice flat finish but when six people all provide input into one single hanging the possible problems as a result of different styles, tensions and possible embellishments are magnified and the task becomes a challenge with a capital "C". Two of the "Witches", Lee and Maryel, found their inspiration in the fabric they found and each used a single piece of fabric. The others had a variety of inspirational sources with their wall hangings being made up of several different fabrics. The brief was to use whatever thread, stitch or embellishment in response to the main theme. The original challenge was to make wall hangings that were in portrait format but, as can be seen below, one ended up in landscape!

These wall hangings were all entered in the Group Quilt section of the National Championships at Sandown in 2003.
