2001/02 - "Chopped-up Challenge"

The seven wall hangings below were made as part of the "Chopped-up Challenge" that we did in 2002. The originator provided a picture which was then divided into various pieces and each member completed one block. The originator then made any additional blocks that were required and assembled the finished article. They were entered into the Group Quilt section of the National Championships at Sandown Park in 2002 and several rosettes were awarded.

My inspiration came from 14 years of living in Oman and the Persian Gulf. The nine squares making up the background were strip-pieced to give the illusion of ground and sky with various icons of the Middle East in the foreground. The Hoopoe (the bird) was machine embroidered and appliquéd. The first time I saw a Hoopoe I nearly crashed the car! One used to visit our garden on a regular basis.

The inspiration for this wallhanging came from my local gym. Every time I pounded away on the treadmill I used to admire a beautiful poster of African ladies. When the Stitch Witches decided to do a chopped-up challange I knew it would fit the bill perfectly so, after asking permission, I had it enlarged at the photocopier's and then handed out the chopped-up pieces. They came back completed in very appropriate African fabrics which fitted the piece brilliantly.

Size: 32" x 40"

Inspired by a picture of Chartres Cathedral, with machine quilting patterns derived from the pillars in Canterbury Catherdral. I chose the colours in an effort to get away from my usual blues - the other Witches were surprised to say the least!

This small wall hanging was an excellent chance to experiment with a variety of hand quilting stitches to introduce some texture, especially seeding - my favourite.

Size: 31½" x 31½ "

The love of curves, a doodle or two, the use of set colours and a technique learned at a workshop inspired this challenge. I then wanted the finished piece to be mounted and framed.
The most difficult part was the frame which I decided had to be padded and quilted. This was a challenge in itself. I was very please with the outcome and "Pieceful Lilies" now hangs in my house.

I was trying to find a recognizable image to chop up and re- assemble. This was a good choice because it has texture already and leant itself to further development. I enjoyed this challenge, not too stressful but fun!

Much of my work is inspired by the colours of Mediterranean architecture. This piece represents the rooftops across Albuifeira in Portugal.

My enthusiasm for ethnic designs and fabrics led me to chose a wax print from the African Fabric Shop as the source of my version of the Stitch Witches' "Chopped up Challenge".
